Public Domain Films
Selling public domain films since 1976, Festival Films offers the largest selection in the world. This is quite a promise, but we continue to research, search, find and restore EVERY FILM possible that is in the public domain. Films fall into the public domain because they were never properly copyrighted in the first place or were not renewed as required by the prevailing copyright laws at the time. Here is a more detailed Copyright Discussion about why films fall into the Public Domain.

You may download a PDF Catalog arranged by genre of the most popular public domain films. Additional lists of TV shows by episode title are available on request.

Please visit our sister website Cafe Roxy where we put public domain films into balanced programs that are being enjoyed by audiences in movie theaters, coffee houses, bars and film societies. The shorts can also spice up TV showings. Each program comes with a colorful poster like the four shown here that you can use to promote your showings. We can send a free Roxy preview disc so you can both check the quality on various shows and see how they play on your equipment. I write a weekly blog discussing new Roxy releases and successes.

FORMATS
Beta-SP, Beta-Digi, DVCam, Hard Drive and other high-range masters are available for mastering commercial DVDs, for stock footage in documentaries and by TV stations around the world. These formats are for those specialized users who demand top quality. Please inquire about prices for the various formats.

DVD-R -- Public domain films are also available on DVD-R, which is also excellent quality. Many TV stations report that the DVD-R format works well for their broadcasts and is far more economical than BetaSP masters. The customized Cafe Roxy Programs are also supplied on DVD-R, because most movie theaters and other venues have DVD projection or large screen TVs in place. DVD-R Prices start at $30 for a feature film, 4 half-hour TV shows or a Cafe Roxy program, with discounts for volume purchases. DVDs come with a statement as to why each film or films are in the public domain. A free DVD sampler disc is available on request.

DEFINITELY PUBLIC DOMAIN
The lists that follow and the PDF Catalog contain mostly American films made before 1964. These films have been carefully researched and have been considered to be in the public domain in the USA for many years. In most cases no underlying music or literary rights are currently being disputed. If we know of any claims we will inform you before filling an order. The Copyright Discussion goes into these factors and also the public domain status of US films in foreign countries and post-1964 "Not Registered" titles.

Public Domain Films may be broadcast on cable TV, sold on VHS or DVD, used for stock footage in various projects and shown to audiences where admission is charged. They may even be dubbed or subtitled into foreign languages, and you may file your own copyright on a version with such changes!

QUALITY GUARANTEE!
Whenever possible the films have been transferred from 35mm for maximum quality. Some serials and TV shows were transferred from 16mm originals. These are often the same masters broadcast by AMC, TCM and other cable channels who show older classics, and in other cases our masters are better quality.

The quality is guaranteed. Any inferior films may be excahanged for other titles. Some films because of their age or rarity are simply not available in perfect condition. Whenever better material turns up, the masters are upgraded! There are no company logos over the picture.
